10 Things You Might Not Know About Electric Scooter batteries.

Same battery that many phones and laptops use.

Yes, while that may sound surprising, the fact is that electric scooters are powered by the same technology as many portable electronic devices such as smartphones and laptops. Lithium-ion batteries are rechargeable and lightweight, this makes them the optimum choice to power a variety of electronic gadgets ranging from phones to laptops and have proven to be reliable while providing the energy necessary for a moped to commute within the city.

High energy density.

The lithium-ion batteries have the highest electrochemical potential, and therefore provide more energy density for the cell. Well, what does that mean? Simply put it means that these batteries can store a lot more energy for their weight as compared to older models. In fact, these batteries provide almost twice the amount of energy density as previously used lead-acid batteries. This means that the battery will be light and won’t act like an anchor and add unnecessary weight to your vehicle, while still providing the required power.

Low-Maintenance battery

Lithium-Ion batteries are very low maintenance. While it takes approximately 9 hours to charge a lead-acid battery, Lithium-ion batteries in scooters can be fully charged within 3-4 hours. Additionally, if you own an electric scooter, you’ll have no need to plan any prolonged priming. A single regular charge will more than suffice.

Low self-discharge

Self-Discharge is the amount of energy a battery consumes without actually being in use. Lithium-ion batteries lose almost half the amount of energy as other alternatives such as lead-acid or nickel-cadmium do without being used. That, therefore, makes these batteries an ideal choice for use in automobiles, especially when you take into consideration traffic conditions.

They will take at least three years before needing to be replaced

An electric scooter can go through between 300 and 500 charging cycles before it begins to start losing power. This would suggest that we can estimate about a year of use without any noticeable decline. After being in use for a year the vehicle will still retain around 75% of its original battery storage capacity. Hence, you can expect your battery to last between 3-4 years before it needs to be replaced.

Battery Management Systems (BMS)

While lithium-ion batteries provide a wide array of benefits they tend to react more harshly to environmental conditions and misuse than other batteries. A complete discharge or overcharge can cause the battery to lose its efficiency or possibly even have dangerous thermal reactions. In order to protect your vehicle against these problems, all-electric scooter batteries come in battery packs that provide a battery management system. A battery management system will monitor the discharge and overcharge of the battery. More advanced BMS systems will also monitor the battery’s temperature and will subsequently cut it off should it start to overheat.

They are recyclable.

E-waste has a reputation for being exceedingly hurtful to the environment. Lithium-ion batteries, however, can be recycled in a number of ways. The most common way to recycle these batteries is called pyrometallurgical recovery. This method uses a high-temperature furnace in order to smelt the batteries and consequently recover the desired metals. Similarly, hydrometallurgical recovery involves the use of liquid solutions in particular sulfuric acid in order to recoup the desired metals from the battery. The final method is known as direct recycling. Direct recycling refers to the removal of the cathode and anode from the battery, restoring and reconditioning it, before subsequently using it in a new battery component.

Relatively young technology.

The lithium-ion battery is a relatively young technology. The first commercial lithium-ion battery was released only as recently as 1991. Hence, lithium-ion is a technology that is currently undergoing a stage of evolution. This means we can expect these batteries to be very different in form and function as soon as ten years from now. This means that we can expect these batteries to be even more efficient and provide better mileage at higher speeds in the future.  

It is not always necessary to completely replace the battery

Sometimes a decrease in battery capacity outside of depreciation through normal use occurs through chemical crystal formation on the battery. If you are alert and able to spot a drop in your battery’s total performance, you may be able to rectify the issue by simply replacing a few cells in the battery rather than the entire apparatus. If it’s too late, however, then replacing the battery is the only plausible option.

They give greater than advertised mileage

A criticism of electric scooters seems to be that they don’t go far enough without needing a recharge. This is not entirely true.
